As I grew up in the entertainment industry, one thing that I was repeatedly told is that it is taboo to ever disclose your relationship status as an actress.
There are many usual reasons given for this "rule", including concerns of privacy, the need to remain as a single lady which is supposedly more appealing to their fans/followers especially those of the opposite gender. Some even find the need to hide their relationships in order to avoid backlash from their fans and followers. While of course there are some who do the opposite thing and even milk their relationships for all its worth for publicity purposes, most would still want to keep it private for various reasons like those above.
My reasons for always wanting to keep these things out of the spotlight is quite simple. I want people to focus on my craft and my films, and I do not wish to have random gossip about my private life overshadowing my work. Moreover, I do not want my decision as to whether I would be in a relationship to depend on what others may think.
But Instagram has gradually shifted from a platform where I would put on purposefully curated and edited photos, to more of a place where I could simply be myself sharing not just my happiest and proudest moments, but also to let you at times know when I am sad and unmotivated.
Our situation is far from ideal. An LDR is never easy but this pandemic has shown me the simple joys of having a partner in life: the joys of being listened to, appreciated, and loved. To those who are in the same situation as I am out there, this pandemic will only test our bonds and make them stronger. I am happy that I am loved. And I hope you are too.
Wish me luck, wish me happiness, and wish me joy,
as I wish the same to everyone.
